What is the National Conservation Foundation – Area II Envirothon?
Envirothon is designed to stimulate, reinforce and enhance interest in the environment and natural resources among high school students. A competitive outdoor team event, Envirothon offers a unique and enjoyable learning experience. A team consists of 5 students, all from the same school. An adult advisor (or advisors) must accompany the team, but is not permitted to assist the team during the competition.
Envirothon tests students' knowledge of soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatic ecology and current environmental issues. This year’s current environmental issue is “Water Resources Management: Local Control and Local Solutions”. In addition, the Envirothon encourages cooperative decision-making and team building. While each student on an Envirothon team is challenged to contribute his or her personal best, the score that counts at the end of an Envirothon is the team score.
Five Area Envirothons are conducted around Ohio each spring. The top four teams from each of the Area competitions progress to the Ohio Envirothon in June held in a different part of the state each year. The top-scoring team in the Ohio Envirothon is eligible to compete in the National Conservation Foundation - Envirothon, hosted by a different state or Canadian province every year. In Ohio, Envirothon is sponsored by the Ohio Federation of Soil and Water Conservation Districts in cooperation with the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Natural resource and environmental specialists from many agencies, organizations, colleges, universities, park districts and businesses devise the Envirothon questions and staff the various testing ecostations.
The Ohio Envirothon is financed by grants, donations from businesses and through contributions to the Don Rehl Memorial Envirothon Fund. Many local businesses also provide services and products in support of Area and Ohio Envirothons.

Area II Envirothon - Highschool
The mission of the North American Envirothon is to develop knowledgeable skilled and dedicated citizens who have an understanding of natural resources and are willing and prepared to work towards achieving and maintaining a balance between the quality of life and the quality of the environment.
The Envirothon mission is accomplished by developing in young people an understanding of the principles and practices of natural resource management and ecology and through practice dealing with complex resource management decisions.
Thousands of teachers and professionals throughout the United States and Canada guide students through the Envirothon each year. The Envirothon program combines classroom learning with outdoor activities, culminating in competitions at the area level (North East Ohio), state and international levels. This exposure to nature from a critical perspective and the understanding of human impacts on the natural world provide invaluable lessons, helping students understand ecosystems and our environment.
Envirothon teams are tested on their knowledge in five topic areas: Soils and Land Use, Aquatic Ecology, Forestry, Wildlife and a Current Environmental Issue. They are exposed to scientists and experts in each of the above fields, working hard, but having fun while learning. Open to high school students, a team may be sponsored by a high school, home schooled group or a scout or community service group. Each school can send two teams of five members each.

GM Green Program
The General Motors Global Rivers Environmental Education Network (GM GREEN) creates opportunities for young people to learn more about the watersheds they live in and to use what they learn to create lasting solutions for pressing water quality issues. The program engages young people to be knowledgeable about watersheds and their problems, to have the skills to solve those problems, and to be motivated to work toward a solution. Through GM GREEN, Earth Force, local environmental organizations, and mentors at General Motors share a commitment to increasing civic engagement, improving the quality of education, and protecting the environment.
